She has to gather the local survivors, recon the enemy, train a militia, and take the war right to the enemy's doorstep. Just what she trained for. De Opresso Liber.

It's a small (page wise) book although its list of characters so far reads like Gone With the Wind. That said, this book definitely puts the science into Sci Fi. It's also refreshing as the battle tactics used are taken from every culture on earth and those cultures given credit for their first use and not just America's military. This is something I have found as a sore spot for me reading other militarily based Sc Fi stories. Even the jargon used is not 21'st century. We still use battle formation and equipment designations from Rome. However, we don't still use Rome's soldier slang. Slang which would be culturally irrelevant in today's world. Saying in the story that all of the characters in a Sci Fi story watch old T.V. shows from the 21'st century. Would be akin to saying a large majority of teens read a lot of Bill Shakespeare, and understand the slang in his stories and plays. So on many levels this is a well crafted and enjoyable story. The technobabble is enjoyable and well thought out terms ( to me ). It should just be a larger book. I know these days many short books (which I refer to as chapters) are needed to keep the writer in food, clothing and shelter. So it's not going to change just for me. I'm definitely going to read the whole series if it continues to entertain as this first story has. My only complaint is the very large list of characters. Which I'm sure will develop into more in later books. I think this is going to be a great series to read.

On Silver Wings (Audible Audio Edition) Evan Currie Dina Pearlman Audible Studios Books Reviews
Currie definitely has a distinct writing style expect bubble gum sci fi action, a wide list of characters/POVs, and (thankfully) strong female characters who hold their own with the guys. Those expecting hard hitting sci fi may be frustrated by the sheer fun Currie has with the story; but those who sit back and enjoy the ride will appreciate sci fi done with exuberance. It isn't silly by any means but it is a pleasure all the same.
Story Hayden is a small colony world with a problem - unknown ships have appeared and are attacking the colonists. Sargeant Sorilla Aida is sent to find out what happened - and finds herself trapped on an inhospitable jungle world trying to save what is left of the colonists from an alien invasion. In space, the human military are facing weapons of mass destruction able to take out capital ships with great efficiency. It becomes imperative to get information back to to Earth before the threat becomes unmanageable and more ships are lost.
With On Silver Wings, we have a battle on two fronts on Hayden with Sargeant Sorilla and the colonists and in space with several fleet groupings. In all, there were 9-10 POVs that we follow throughout this little war. Some live, some die, and there are many valiant sacrifices in order to save the day.
Currie has a knack for creating interesting aliens that seem plausible but not pretentious. As with the Oddyssey One series, the bad guys create great foils for our protagonists. Currie doesn't forget the science and you'll find explanations for the physics in here - but never so much that your brain bleeds. He has a great way of blending the science with a really fun story.
Those wondering where this falls in science fiction canon can look to movies. Currie's books have the same exuberant fun as a Bruckheimer/Bey type of action movie. If you don't try to take it too seriously, it's a great time and a very enjoyable read. But it's never preposterous or melodramatic - just time well spent from the mundane world.
I was greatly reminded of Currie's other, Heirs of Empire, due to both having a similar type of very strong lead female military commander. In all, a great book and an ok audio narration. Really, I look forward to every new Currie book because I know I'm in for a great time!
I got this one free on a one day give away. It's a very well plotted and logical story, with a good main character. It's a 6 book series which bought as one block if you got book one free is $22. This puts it over my penny a page rule at $4.40 average per book though.
Most of the 4 earlier books are $2.99 but they are also mostly under 300 pages, with 5 being 211 pages. Sadly as seem to be a trend on there is no page count on number 6, which was only released (02/2016) a few weeks ago. I don't mind the higher price on brand new books, if you are impatient you pay the premium price like movies or series released you want immediately.
i don't recommend any book at a penny plus per page in electronic version unless they are classics that have stood the test of time. Sadly the price on those (Often decades old) are $5.99 and higher and used paperback (And occasionally worn hardbacks) at close to that price or cheaper, often on here, even with shipping. Major publishers have forced and others to raise book prices lately so it's not 's fault for the increases.
This is a military/war/adventure type story with a fast pace but not much character development past the main character but it flows very well. I'd say watch for it on sale (Or free giveaway like I got it) and buy the rest if it looks like you find it good enough to risk $2.99 (US) each on the next 3.
It flows fairly quickly and is a good read but I wouldn't call it an instant classic.
Like I complained above, over a penny a page on an electronic book seems steep to me. This one has a few editing flaws but no horrible ones (I once bought a known book i read before with 2 chapters missing!) like you find occasionally.
The author seems to have quite a few books for sale and decent sales it probably isn't just me that likes him. It's a good military vs.aliens plot that's not to "heavy" to read if you like that kind of book. It has no idiotic technology or stupid behavior or emotionality causing people to stumble into danger or suspends "disbelief" as not realistic in the story.
I gave it 4 stars, mostly because at free it was fine. At $2.99 I'd probably give it 3 stars. Of course I liked the original "Swamp Thing" movies and watch SyFy Saturday night original movies so maybe I'm an easy sell.
If you can catch this for free definitely read it and decide if you want to try the other 5. I've paid more for much worse!
